A survey recently revealed at 48% of the UK population identify as Christian, with 6% of them calling themselves ‘practicing Christians’. This means 6% of those who identify as Christian are worshipping at least monthly as part of a local church and are reading their Bible and praying at least once a week.
There are so many great things going on, I’m not stirring doom and gloom, but I do want to challenge the reality that 6% practising christians is not a great result! Out of those who profess to be Christians, only 6% are actually leading themselves. I would argue that one of the biggest barriers to church growth and kingdom expansion tomorrow, will be us failing to lead ourselves today.
How many times do we say the words “I’m just not a leader”? John Maxwell says “leadership is influence, nothing less, nothing more”. Every single one of us has influence over someone. Yourself, colleagues, friends, family.
When you look at it like this, you should feel the responsibility of leadership upon your shoulders!
In his second letter to Timothy, Paul says…
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
He has given us the Spirit we need to lead! Regardless of your personality, gifts or skillset…you have the Spirit God has given you, making you bold, powerful and self controlled! You have what it takes to get up and start leading yourself!
Excellent leaders do not lead organisations, teams, structures or projects first. An excellent leader, first and foremost, learns how to lead themselves first.
As you study the Bible you begin to see that we, as humans, are not just skin and bones. We are first and foremost spiritual beings. We have our soul and our mind, the platform for our emotions and feelings, where we think and decide. Then comes our flesh, the physical stuff you can see.
With this understanding of our make up in mind, I want to call each you, as a Christian man, to self-leadership, from the inside out. To lead your spirit, your soul, your mind and your body excellently!
Why this way round?
My beliefs lead my feelings, which influence my thoughts, which determine my actions. Leading ourselves excellently means leading from the inside out.
One of the greatest things you can do for God is to lead yourself well today.
